How to find the home of your dreams

Finding the right home is not luck, it is a method. Here is a simple, honest process to define what you truly want, shortlist the right places and avoid the mistakes that catch most buyers out.

Almost everyone starts the search the same way: scrolling listings, falling for photos, then feeling overwhelmed. The people who end up genuinely happy with their home did something different. They got clear on what mattered before they started looking. Here is how to do the same, whether you are buying in Bali or anywhere else.

1. Define the life, not just the house

Your dream home is really a dream life. Before you look at a single listing, picture an ordinary day in it. Where do you have your coffee? Do you work from home, and where? Who visits, and how often? Are you close to the beach, the town, quiet rice fields?

Write down the answers. This turns a vague wish into a clear brief you can actually search against.

2. Separate your must-haves from your nice-to-haves

No home is perfect, so decide in advance what is non-negotiable and what you can flex on. A simple exercise:

When you view, you will feel tempted by beautiful nice-to-haves. Your must-have list keeps you honest.

The dream is not the home with the most features. It is the home that gets your must-haves right and happens to delight you with a few extras.

3. Set a realistic, all-in budget

Decide what you can comfortably spend, then work backwards to include everything, not just the sticker price: taxes, notary and legal fees, any company setup, furnishing and a sensible buffer. Knowing your true ceiling lets you look with confidence and move quickly when the right place appears.

4. Choose the location first, the house second

You can renovate a house. You cannot move it. Spend real time on the area: visit at different times of day, check the drive to the places you will use often, get a feel for the neighbours and the noise. In Bali, this is where Canggu and Berawa stand out, close to the beach and the best of island life, with strong demand that protects the value of your home.

5. View like a professional, not a tourist

It is easy to be swept away on a viewing. Slow down and look past the styling:

If viewing from abroad, a live video walkthrough is your best friend. Ask the agent to move slowly, open cupboards, step outside and show you the street.

6. Avoid the classic mistakes

A shortcut. When a home genuinely ticks your must-haves, the location is right and the legals are clean, trust it. Waiting for a mythical ten-out-of-ten often means missing the nine that would have made you very happy.

7. Trust the feeling, once the facts check out

Method gets you to the right shortlist. But there is a moment, when you walk in, or when the video pans across the pool, and you simply know. That feeling matters, as long as the facts behind it stack up. When the head and the heart agree, you have found it.
